Letter from the Editor: April 1, 2020

Remaining connected is vital to NSU’s mission across the university. Through technology, NSU is doing just that, even as we adapt to the rapidly changing guidelines set forth by the CDC and government. This week, President Hanbury confirmed that NSU would remain fully online through the remainder of the 2020 winter term. And NSU is indeed fully online, providing access to cultural opportunities, helpful information, and reference materials in a virtual setting.

NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale has “virtually” opened its doors allowing visitors to walk through its current exhibits without having to take a step. The online tour features the work of William J. Glackens, the Happy! exhibit, artwork from the Surrealism Movement in Latin America, and contemporary pieces that fit the theme of Transitions and Transformations.

The NSU Alumni Association hosts a webinar series to keep connected offering useful and timely information. Recently, graduate dietitian students from the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine shared tips for maintaining proper nutrition to stay healthy in our current environment. The next webinar in the series takes place this Thursday, April 2, and focuses on mental health during a pandemic. We welcome you to join the Zoom webinar or watch live on Facebook.

The Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine (INIM) is also continuing to host its research seminar series via Zoom. Join the INIM this Friday, April 3 at noon (EST) to hear Gesulla Cavanaugh, PhD, MPH, MS discuss “The Behavioral Response of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Neurotypical Children: A Comparison Study using Eye-Tracking Data.” To RSVP, please email Charles Ramos to confirm your attendance.

While the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center is no longer accepting walk-in visitors at this time, the center is fully operational. Librarians are available for faculty members and students during virtual reference hours and an extensive catalog of materials are available online. Online research appointments can also be scheduled at the Martin and Gail Press Health Professions Division Library, Oceanographic Campus Library, and Panza Maurer Law Library.

We could never have imagined how COVID-19 would impact our operations, but our preparations and processes have enabled NSU to maintain its excellence in serving our students and our community. As always, please reach out to myself or my team if you have any questions or concerns. I have greatly appreciated our recent conversations, and I look forward to future virtual connection opportunities – and even more so to face-to-face gatherings – once we flatten the curve.

Thank you for your continued support,

Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D.
