Letter from the Editor: December 2019

Happy Holidays! This semester has flown by, and before I share some of the highlights from this fall and let you know about upcoming events, I want to be sure to take this opportunity to say thank you. I appreciate your support in all of NSU’s endeavors, and wish each of you a happy and healthy holiday season.

SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES:

In September, members of the NSU community were affected by the devastation of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, Florida, and the Southeastern U.S. We created NSU CARES to provide relief for students, employees, and alumni in need of assistance after a traumatic disaster. Over $18,000, including a generous donation from the Agrawal Family Foundation, was raised during NSU’s relief drive.

CELEBRATING NSU:

So many great memories were created at Homecoming this year. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the festivities – from the Kick-off Celebration to the 28th Annual “Anything that Floats” Raft Race and the Homecoming Basketball Game and Alumni Reception. We were excited to host over 11 homecoming events, bringing 250 alumni back to the university. Check out all photos from our 2019 #SharksHomecoming. We are grateful to everyone who took the time to “bleed Shark blue” in support of the school.

HONORING DONORS:

The 9th Annual Fellows Society Celebration Event was held on November 12. We inducted 31 new Fellows into the Society – individuals, corporations and trusts who have made cumulative gifts of $50,000 or more. Three members were honored with NSU’s Shark Circle designation for lifetime giving of $1 million or more.

GIVING TUESDAY:

For this year’s Day of Giving on Tuesday, December 3, NSU set a goal of raising $24K in 24 hours. With the help of 32 champions working across campus and eight regional campuses, we exceeded our goal and raised $62,842.01, with 793 donors, including seven who established Changing Lives scholarships. More than half of the contributors were first-time donors to NSU. Our combined forces proved what the NSU community can achieve together! Take a look at photos from throughout our #GivingTuesday campaign.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
Save the date for NSU’s Global Day of Service. On Saturday, January 25, 2020, we plan to demonstrate the reach and power of the NSU network through a coordinated effort of volunteer opportunities and initiatives. We’re inviting our entire NSU Shark family to participate. If you’d like to host an event or serve as a volunteer, click here.

In February, NSU will present its annual signature event, the Celebration of Excellence. President Hanbury will share NSU achievements and discuss the future vision of the university. In addition, he will induct our newest Shark Circle members and present the President’s Award for Excellence in Community Service to this year’s honorees, James and Cathy Donnelly.

James and Cathy made a significant gift to the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship to establish the property management program in the Stiles School of Real Estate Development. James was recognized as an Entrepreneur Hall of Fame inductee in 2014. He has co-chaired the Broward Business Council on Homelessness and served as chair of the Broward Workshop. Cathy was appointed by former Governor Scott to serve on the Children’s Service council, which she now chairs. She has also served as a speaker in the Huizenga College’s Women’s Success Series. Their company, the Castle Group, oversees more than 330 properties and employs more than 1,500 people. We are honored to present them with this award.

Join us for this special event on Saturday, February 29 in the Rick Case Arena at the Don Taft University Center. Register online here …

Thank you again for your generosity and continued friendship. Enjoy your holidays and I look forward to seeing you in the new year!

Sincerely,
