Support Units – Research Compliance

Janice Roldan supports research compliance at NSU, which is housed in the central research department, Division of Research and Economic Development (DoR).

What role do you play at NSU?

I am the Research Compliance Manager where I help faculty, staff, and students navigate complex federal and state research compliance regulations. My goal is to ensure the NSU research community is committed to adhering to high standards of ethics, integrity, and responsibility in their research projects. At NSU, I wear many hats:

  • Administrator for both the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), where I am responsible for scheduling monthly and/or quarterly meetings, protocol management in the IRB Manager electronic management system, conducting facility site inspections and many other responsibilities for these two committees.
  • Manage research misconduct proceedings as they arise. I work closely with Dr. Gary Margules (VP for Research) in assessing research misconduct allegations received, creating inquiry and investigative committees, assisting committees in their investigations, and consulting with legal counsel as necessary.
  • Manage Financial Conflict of Interest Disclosures (FCOI), monitor and track required FCOI training, and assist in the development and management of all FCOI management plans.
  • Work with Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) to submit invention disclosures and patent information into the iEdison portal.
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage DoR’s annual External Funding Recognition Reception held at Grande Oaks Golf Club each Fall. This event honors all external funding recipients for the prior fiscal year as well as awards the Provost’s Research and Scholarship Award (PRSA).
  • Serve as a member of the Research Space Allocation team where I take part in the development of research space allocation guidelines, conduct research space audits, and assist in coordinating research space allocations.
  • Serve on the Employee Engagement Committee for DoR, where we plan departmental social and team building events such as our annual holiday party, potluck lunches, birthday celebrations, and charity drives.

What type of research does your work support?

I support and interact with faculty in all areas of research at NSU, with the majority of my services supporting the IACUC and IBC members, faculty, and student researchers.

What was your journey that brought you to NSU?

I attended Florida Atlantic University with ambitions of becoming a hospital administrator. With no luck securing a job in the healthcare field, I was able to secure an amazing job as a Grants Management Specialist at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest NIH institutes. Working at NIAID allowed me to participate in many institute initiatives including the Centers for AIDS Research (CFAR) program, the AIDs Clinical Trials Network, as well as many other joint institutional programs throughout the NIH. The training and experiences I gained at NIH were unparalleled.

Missing my family, I decided to move back to Florida where I got a job as a Senior Sponsored Programs Manager in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Miami School of Medicine. This role was unique in that I changed hats from issuing grant awards to assisting faculty in proposal submissions.

When the opportunity arose at NSU to work in research compliance, I jumped at the chance to be closer to my home in Coral Springs, FL. I have now been working at NSU for 10 years!

What do you enjoy outside your work at NSU?

I am married with two young children and two bonus teenagers, so free time isn’t something I have much of. When I do have time to myself, I enjoy Peloton cycling and strength workouts, volunteering at my daughter’s elementary school and softball team, and finally, if I can manage, I love diving into a good legal thriller book.
