Drug Discovery News Interviewed Dental Medicine Faculty about Oral Bacteria to Inhibit SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Drug Discovery News recently interviewed Mark Cayabyab, Ph.D. and Alexander Bontempo, Ph.D, from the College of Dental Medicine, about their research on compounds from oral bacteria that inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection. They found that supernatants from P. gingivalis cultures inhibited pseudovirus infection in human cell lines. Once they identify the inhibitory compounds, the molecules could be possible candidates for treating or even preventing COVID-19.

Dr. Cayabyab noted the lack of prior research connecting the oral cavity to COVID-19. Identifying these inhibitory compounds could lead to treatments or preventatives to block virus transmission.
