Benedict C. Albensi, Ph.D., BCMAS, CRQM, Chair, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy presented clinical trial data on Oct 4th at the Inaugural Internation Conference on Advances in the Health Benefits of Agri-Foods at the St. Boniface Hospital Research Center in Winnipeg, Canada (https://meetccarm.ca/). The presentation, titled ‘Effects of Dietary Flax Beverage on Memory and Cognition’ presented the results of the study. that, PET scans revealed statistically significant differences between the two groups in the percentage of metabolic alterations (regions of Cerebellum Crus I, Rostral Temporal Thalamus, Cerebellum VIIb, and Medial Prefrontal Thalamus). This work concludes that Flax consumption may alter metabolism when consumed for 6 months.
Michelle A. Clark, Ph.D., Dean, Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy, is the PI on a grant from the National Institute of Science and Technology for $963,000. The grant was won with the aid of Representative Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and in light of the Breast Cancer research being conducted by Dr. Jean Latimer and the AutoNation Institute for Breast Cancer Research and Care. The award will supply funds for the purchase of equipment to conduct breast cancer and related research. The initial focus of the research will be on the standardization of environmentally induced genetic changes documenting the pathway to early disease in different ethnicities.
Narasimman Gurusamy M.Pharm, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences submission to the American Heart Association Specialty Conference, Basic Cardiovascular Sciences Scientific Sessions, was top-scoring and will be presented in November in Chicago. Dr. Narasimman Gurusamy, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy, presented collaborative research with other NSU professors Dr. Robert Speth and Dr. Lisa Robison at the American Heart Association Basic Cardiovascular Sciences Conference in July 2024, Chicago. His study explored how ketogenic conditions affect mitochondrial function and cardiac health, highlighting the role of long noncoding RNAs in ketone body-mediated cardiac mitochondrial protection. His abstract was among the top-scoring at the AHA-BCVS conference, earning him an invitation to present at the “Best of AHA Specialty Conferences” session during the AHA’s annual Scientific Sessions in November 2024.
