April 2024 Research Highlights reported by the Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences.

Lead presenter, Caroline Dadowski, AuD, Assistant Professor, and Jackie M. Davie, PhD, Professor, will be addressing the question “Is Reflective Journaling for AuD Students Worthwhile?” during the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) HearTech Expo in Atlanta, Georgia from April 17-20.

Abstract:
Reflective practice has been widely documented as a tool to aid in decision-making, help understand difficult concepts, and as an emotional outlet. Current clinical preceptor training suggests we encourage students to use reflection to develop critical thinking skills and take ownership of their educational experience. We evaluated how various factors such as age, program level, training in reflective practice, and frequency of using reflective practice relate to attitudes and perceptions about learning in audiology.

Monique Mokha, PhD, Professor

Research accomplishment: Collaborative work between undergraduate student and Prof. Mokha where they questioned which common preparatory movement would optimize the float through the air illusion of the grand jeté. They used the motion capture system and force plate in the Sport Performance and Gait Science Laboratory to study 20 highly skilled dancers. They found the run approach, which uses a single leg take-off was best but it does require high vertical ground reaction forces and a moderately bent knee leading to a recommendation of more single leg plié training to reduce injury risk. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1089313X241228894?journalCode=dmja

Corey Peacock, PhD, Program Director and Professor

Research accomplishment: In Collaboration with Dr. Gabriel Sanders, Dr. Peacock has authored a new textbook highlighting the importance of data collection, statistical analysis, and artificial intelligence in the space of sports science. This textbook is formatted as a “how to” manual for aspiring sports scientists in the team sport setting.
