NSU Faculty Involved in Special Issue Publications

The prestigious research journal, Eye, of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, published a special issue August 2024 on global eye health.  Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry Professor, Janet L. Leasher, OD, MPH, FAAO, FNAP, is co-author of five research articles each describing the global prevalence and trends of vision loss—cataract, refractive error, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and glaucoma.

According to Dr. Leasher, “while efforts to improve access to quality eyecare have taken place since the turn of the 21st century, the vision loss numbers continue to rise. National policies to include eyecare and refractive services for everyone are imperative to reduce this burden. Both the United Nations and the World Health Organization’s call for effective coverage by 2030 of cataract (a cloudy lens within the eye) surgery and refractive error (correction with a simple pair of spectacles) challenge governments, funders, health care providers, and grassroots community efforts to urgently address these preventable and cost effective causes of needless vision impairment.”

The Bulletin of Marine Science published a special issue on Advances in Ecosystem-Scale Coral Reef Visual Surveys. Brian K. Walker Ph.D., Research Program Director, GIS & Spatial Ecology Laboratory at the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences, served as a co-editor of the BMS special issue which consisted of 10 peer-reviewed publications focused on large-scale monitoring efforts that inform ecological and management topics that are relevant and timely for coral reef health.

The Bulletin of Marine Science is dedicated to the dissemination of high-quality research from the world’s oceans and publishes all aspects of marine science including papers in marine biology, biological oceanography, fisheries, marine affairs, applied marine physics, marine geology and geophysics, marine and atmospheric chemistry, and meteorology and physical oceanography.
