Sherra Mizrahi is currently enrolled in the dental medicine program and is in their fourth and final year.

Briefly talk me through your research journey from your 1st day at NSU to today.

My research journey at Nova Southeastern University began in my third academic year, driven by a longstanding interest in research. Despite initial coursework demands, I seized an opportune moment to approach a mentor, acquire necessary certifications, and engage in ongoing research. Joining an established project, I swiftly acclimated and assumed responsibility for a designated segment.

Prior to my involvement in this research, I participated in several programs, steadily accumulating valuable experiences that laid the foundation for my current pursuits. Overcoming the initial challenges of integrating into an established project, I quickly immersed myself in the investigative process, contributing significantly to the study.

A notable milestone in my research journey was receiving the Dr. Frederick Allen Ruggeberg’s Research Scholarship Award. This recognition, earned for an exemplary oral presentation at NSU’s Inaugural Research Day 2023, highlights my commitment to scholarly inquiry and dedication to advancing dental medicine. As the sole predoctoral contributor among esteemed peers, this accomplishment underscores my dedication to making meaningful contributions to the field of dental medicine.

What made you interested in the type of research you are currently working on?

My interest in research has been a longstanding facet of my academic journey, motivated by a commitment to contribute meaningfully to the field of dentistry. I consider myself fortunate to focus on orthodontics, as this directly correlates with my goal of one day specializing in this particular field. Recognizing the pivotal role that research plays in advancing clinical knowledge and patient care within orthodontics, I embarked on a deliberate path to leverage research as a means to strengthen my future expertise.

Moreover, the intricate nature of orthodontics, with its emphasis on craniofacial anatomy, occlusion dynamics, and innovative treatment modalities, has fueled my intellectual curiosity. The prospect of contributing to the evolving landscape of orthodontic research, with the ultimate aim of enhancing treatment efficacy and patient outcomes, serves as a compelling motivation for my current research endeavors.

By immersing myself in research aligned with orthodontics, I am not only fulfilling a personal passion for inquiry but also actively cultivating a foundation of knowledge that will undoubtedly inform and elevate my future practice within this specialized domain. This deliberate fusion of research and orthodontics reflects a strategic and forward-thinking approach to my academic and professional pursuits.

What made you decide to work with your current research mentor?

The decision to collaborate with Dr. Mesko as my research mentor was influenced by a series of professional interactions. Having previously engaged with Dr. Mesko in the simulation laboratory on multiple occasions, I later found myself assigned to his team in the dental clinic. Over the course of daily interactions, Dr. Mesko transitioned from being my mentor in the clinical setting to assuming the role of my research mentor.

During this period, I gained valuable insights into Dr. Mesko’s dedicated passion for orthodontics, witnessed his active involvement in research endeavors, and had the privilege of learning from his impeccable dental skills. This organic evolution of our professional relationship solidified my decision to work with Dr. Mesko, as his expertise, commitment to orthodontics, and involvement in research align closely with my academic and career objectives.

How does this work relate to your future career goals and what do you plan to do next?

This research is highly relevant to my future career goals, as I aspire to specialize in orthodontics. The award-winning phase one of our pilot study represents an initial step in our broader research, which aims to discern the comparative benefits and potential drawbacks of orthodontic extrusion versus periodontal crown lengthening on the adjacent teeth undergoing treatment.

Looking ahead, my plan is to delve deeper into this research continuum and advance to subsequent phases, building upon the foundation established in phase one. I am committed to specializing in orthodontics and envision contributing continuously to research endeavors within this field. This strategic alignment between my academic and research pursuits and my overarching career objectives underscores my dedication to advancing knowledge and innovation in orthodontics.
