Sotiris Chaniotakis grew up in a small village in rural Greece with three brothers knowing he wanted to be a doctor. After moving to the United States, and recognizing the vast cultural and social differences between the two countries, he knew he wanted to live and study in an environment that was inclusive and diverse.
While searching for a medical school to attend, Chaniotakis was impressed with NSU’s innovative and practical approach to medical education, and applied for admittance into the charter class of the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine. He received a scholarship from the Patel Family Foundation, which helps to cover his tuition. One reason he chose NSU is because he is drawn to the idea of providing quality healthcare on a global scale.
“My bi-cultural development formed my identity and granted me a desire to understand, connect with and help people of other cultures. NSU struck me as a place with people of diverse backgrounds, ideas and as an institution committed to improving health globally.”
Chaniotakis understands the ongoing need for compassionate care, as well as leaders who can drive healthcare discovery and advancement. His long term plans include opening a medical clinic in Greece to address the needs of that population, and as a way of giving back to his homeland. As the scholarship provided by the Patel Family Foundation changed his life, he feels an obligation to help others.
“As a future alumnus, I aspire to open doors for young, inquisitive minds through education, mentoring, and financial scholarship. I will not forget the faith that this institution has shown in me and I will rise to a new level of excellence and responsibility.”
Kudos to Sotiris Chaniotakis. Congratulations to Future MD physician. An educational journey from Greece to Davie. Best of Wishes.
