As we prepare for the “Return of the Sharks” at the start of the fall semester, there are some significant changes coming to NSU. President and CEO George L. Hanbury announced mergers, retirements and promotions earlier this week. Dr. Hanbury also released the university’s Return of the Sharks plan for all NSU students.
NSU continues to weave its core value of diversity and inclusion throughout events. Earlier this month, the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Student Government Association held a conference on Race Relations. Powerful conversations took place during the day-long event, providing a space for presenters and participants to share their emotions and their experiences in an effort to begin the healing process. Donors Jacob and Melissa DeMayo recently made a gift to NSU University School in memory of George Floyd. The donation is being used to foster the school’s diversity and inclusion initiatives, which include a series of summer workshops on anti-racism for students, faculty, and administrators.
June is also Pride Month. To celebrate, NSU’s College of Psychology brought together a panel of students, faculty, and community members to discuss their experiences as part of the LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Asexual, & Allies) community. College of Psychology Director of Outreach Carlos Perez, Ed.D. hosted the webinar. The NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale also celebrated the occasion through its “Sense of Pride” initiative.
Fins up! The Division of Advancement and Communications recently received news that NSU received a 2020 CASE Educational Fundraising Award for overall improvement in the category Private Research/Doctoral Institutions with Endowments under $740 Million. This is the first time that NSU has been nationally recognized for its fundraising success and improvement.
“In receiving a CASE Educational Fundraising Award, you are not only demonstrating the highest levels of professionalism and best practice in fundraising, you and your colleagues also are contributing to the betterment of educational advancement worldwide by serving as a model to which others can aspire,” wrote Paul Heaton, Sr. Director, Member Engagement, Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
In addition, Fitch Ratings has affirmed the ‘A-‘ rating on Florida Development Finance Corporation revenue refunding and revenue bonds issued on behalf of NSU. The ratings reflect NSU’s solid demand profile in a competitive but favorable region, as well as stabilization in key programmatic areas. Thanks to donors like you, NSU’s has a positive outlook for the future.
In Dr. Hanbury’s message, you will read that I have accepted the position of President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Broward. Thank you for all of the connections that we’ve made over the past seven years. I will certainly miss the shark family I have made here with my team, my colleagues, and especially you, our donors.
Over the next month, I will work with my successor, Terry Mularkey, M.S., CRFE, to ensure a smooth transition in leadership. You’ll get to meet him in our next issue. I look forward to watching NSU grow and thrive as a vital part of Broward County.
Stay safe and Shark On,
Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D.
Vice President for Advancement and Community Relations
