Mularkey’s Message

Classes, athletic events, and state-of-the-art research facilities are once again energized with the start of the new semester. As always, we have many stories to share, from USchool preschoolers learning through hands-on exploration and play at the Awsare Family Fish Bowl Exploratorium to ALS patients finding hope at the NSU Health Cathy J. Husman ALS Center.

Did You Know?

  • The recently-published inaugural issue of ONE NSU celebrates the 60th anniversary of the university and introduces a new forum for graduates to share achievements and stories. The magazine also provides alumni with noteworthy news and showcases university programs.
  • NSU introduces Michael Burtov, an accomplished entrepreneur, author, and innovative ecosystem leader, as the chief innovation officer of NSU and executive director of the Alan B. Levan | NSU Broward Center of Innovation, and Heather Macy, who starts her 26th year of coaching as the new head coach of NSU women’s basketball. Welcome to the Shark family!
  • The newly unveiled Cathy J. Husman Fine Arts Gallery showcases a curated selection of sculptures from a larger collection donated by NSU benefactor David Husman in honor of his late wife, Cathy Husman, who died in 2023. The gallery is located on the first floor of the Alvin Sherman Library.

In this issue of the Donor Connection, we talk to Ronald Chenail, Ph.D., executive vice president, provost, and chief academic officer, about the recent Carnegie classification bestowed on NSU. He explains what that designation means for students and donors and provides an insider’s view of what’s next for the university. The newsletter contains a link to the first “Donor Connect,” where we talk face-to-face with our donors. New conversations will air once a month on Mako TV News. We’re also launching a new feature this month, introducing the larger audience of donors and alumni to a member of the advancement team. We hope you’ll enjoy the opportunity to get to know some of the behind-the-scenes members of the Shark family.

On the horizon for NSU is the state of the union address from NSU President and CEO Harry K. Moon, M.D., FACS, FRCSEd., on October 1. We look forward to sharing what the future holds for NSU with all of our donors and alumni. Thank you for continuing to make each year a better one for our students and our community.

Fins Up!
