Mularkey’s Message

I want to start this message by thanking the NSU community for coming together in support of those who have been impacted by the devastation left in the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton. We are grateful for all of those who have reached out to offer their support to members of our Shark family, particularly at our regional campuses across the state. The NSU Cares fund was created specifically to help those in need after a natural disaster. Donations are welcomed and appreciated, and if you need assistance, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Due to the weather, the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship had to postpone the Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The event has been rescheduled for Oct. 27. Congratulations to this year’s class of honorees: Thomas M. McDonald, John E. Miller, and Daniella Ortiz.

  • Dr. Harry K. Moon – NSU president-elect, executive vice president, and chief operating officer – was recently named fellow ad hominem of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a product of his preeminent career of healing and helping people.
  • Top pediatric surgeon and healthcare executive Chad A. Perlyn, M.D., Ph.D., MBA,  has been  tapped for the new role of chief medical officer for NSU’s seven health care-related colleges and NSU Health.
  • Over a 44-year period (1978 to 2021), more than 4,500 legal malpractice claims were made in the state of Florida. NSU Shepard Broad College of Law professors Robert M. Jarvis and Debra Moss Vollweiler analyzed the claims, and their findings appeared in the October 2024 issue of the St. Mary’s Journal on Legal Malpractice and Ethics.
  • Sixty professionals from NextEra Energy, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, and local municipalities are enrolled in the one-year M.B.A. program at NSU’s Palm Beach Campus. After completing the fast-track program, students will be able to immediately put their knowledge to use.

In this issue of Donor Connection, my wife Nancy and I had the opportunity to share the inspiration behind our first Changing Lives Scholarship and learn more about a recipient of another of our scholarships. The issue also spotlights the National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation and the Hochberg-Miniaci Razor’s Edge Shark Talent Scholars Program. We also share news of an exciting donation to the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and look forward to a new exhibition featuring this gift.

As a final note for this message, October is breast cancer awareness month. NSU’s Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research is on the forefront of finding new methods to study and treat this disease. A team of researchers is currently conducting pre-clinical trials on two new drugs designed to shrink and eventually destroy cancer cells. We are proud to be a part of the fight against breast cancer and extend our gratitude to the donors who support these efforts.

Stay safe, and we look forward to connecting with you soon.
