As an undergraduate, Nuverah Mohsin majored in biomathematics and volunteered at health-care and social service agencies. Working with those in need inspired her goal to attend medical school.
Reaching that goal became possible because of the Mary Jane Harlow Scholarship Fund, which is assisting Mohsin as she begins her second year at the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (NSU MD).
Mohsin grew up in Panama City, Florida, and attended Florida State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biomathematics.
“During my undergraduate career, I worked with infants at an Early Head Start program, homeless individuals within my community, patients and medical professionals in the emergency department of a local hospital, and refugees seeking better opportunities,” she said.
“These experiences inspired me to want to become a physician.”
A member of the inaugural class of NSU MD, “I have completed and thoroughly enjoyed my first year of medical school at NSU with a supportive group of classmates and faculty,” Mohsin said.
Mohsin began medical school in 2018 with an interest in pediatrics. Now, she plans to explore various specialties during her clinical rotations.
After graduation, residency, and fellowship training, she plans to work in an academic teaching hospital where she can participate in research and care for patients.
“Ultimately, I want to practice as a physician who can improve the quality of life of my patients, both within my community and abroad.”
Mohsin plans to intern at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa. “I will intern at the Integrated Mathematical Oncology Department. This opportunity will allow me to work on a project involving math and medicine.
“Because I am interested in working at an academic center, I am very excited about this opportunity,” she said.
In a letter to Mary M. Short, president and trustee of the Mary Jane Harlow Charitable Trust, Mohsin expressed her appreciation and described how the scholarship is changing her life.
“Your generosity will greatly help reduce the financial burden of medical school,” Mohsin said. “The scholarship will allow me to continue to study to become a doctor…and to achieve my goals.
“Thank you for investing in my future.”
