Pediatric Mental Health Services

Under the umbrella of the NSU College of Psychology and NSU Health Care Centers, there are 13 pediatric specialties serving children and adolescents on NSU’s Fort Lauderdale-Davie campus. These specialty clinics address the important need for mental health services for children. NSU is proud to offer reasonably priced services to meet the needs of children and their families. Parents play a crucial role in looking out for early signs of mental health problems, and NSU can assist parents by providing expert evaluation and guidance . As mental health professionals, NSU clinicians play the role of helping parents and families manage and treat those problems. In cases where a problem is identified, getting help early is key, and NSU Health Care Centers specialize in the most current pediatric mental health care techniques. From ADHD treatment to school-related issues, NSU specialty clinics can guide children or teens to a positive quality of life. The wide array of services offered helps to ensure children reach developmental and emotional milestones, learn healthy social skills, cope with any underlying trauma and have a bright future ahead.

Diagnostic Services

The Unicorn Children’s Foundation Developmental Assessment Clinic provides psycho-developmental evaluations for children 18 months – 7 years suspected of having autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or exhibiting developmental delays. The comprehensive evaluations assess several domains of functioning (i.e., cognitive, adaptive, and social-emotional) utilizing gold-standard assessment tools. The primary goals of the evaluation are to identify current levels of functioning, assess developmental skills, and obtain a comprehensive understanding of the child in order to provide individualized recommendations for treatment and service planning. Additionally, our clinic serves children with a prior diagnosis of ASD for reassessment purposes. The evaluation is typically completed in one day and families receive preliminary feedback on the day of testing. In addition, evaluations can be completed in Spanish for Spanish-speaking families. The services are funded by the Taft Foundation for underserved communities.

Community Outreach

As part of our commitment to increase awareness and early identification of autism spectrum disorder, we offer free trainings for schools, parents, faith-based organizations, and community groups within Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties. These trainings are offered in both English and Spanish.
