Mercedes Fernandez, Ph.D.

Mercedes Fernandez, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at NSU’s College of Psychology. Dr. Fernandez recently published a paper which links bilingualism to frontal-lobe neural activity and executive function. Executive function is a set of skills that help us to focus attention, to maintain and manipulate information in short-term memory, and to manage multiple tasks. Her work was the first to reveal that the degree of linguistic balance (equivalency of proficiency between the two languages) moderates both the brain’s electrical activity and executive function. Her project was funded by the National Science Foundation.
