Letter from the Editor: May 13, 2020

I want to take this opportunity to thank the nearly 350 donors who went “All in” with NSU this past Tuesday, helping to raise nearly $25,000 in 24 hours. We had 100 percent participation from our President’s Council members, and received gifts from 140 alumni donors and more than 160 gifts from faculty and staff. We appreciate everyone who contributed to support NSU programs, initiatives, and students on #GivingTuesdayNow.

Earlier this month, President Hanbury announced NSU’s intention to reopen its residence halls and resume in-person classes on campus at the start of the fall semester.  This decision is subject to any directives from the governor of Florida, as well as guidelines enacted by the CDC or local government. NSU continues to prioritize the safety of our entire community during this transition, so please look for updates from Dr. Hanbury as we get closer to the start of the new school year. Read Dr. Hanbury’s full message.

Also, if you have a few moments, please take the opportunity to watch this tribute to NSU’s Class of 2020.

Due to social distancing guidelines, our 35th Annual Golf Classic was cancelled, but you can still help support NSU student-athletes with our silent auction. Register here to see all of the fantastic items up for bid online. Proceeds will fund athletic scholarships. Please watch this video with thank-you messages from some of our student-athletes.

All of our students and faculty members adapted to virtual learning, and we interviewed Melissa Morris, MSN, RN, CPN, CHSE, director of simulation and interactive technology NSU’s Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences, to learn more about how simulation experiences—critical to the advancement of many of our healthcare programs—have changed since mid-March.

Many of our Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing students are also on the frontlines. Marcella M. Rutherford, PhD, MBA, MSN, RN, dean of the Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing, wrote to her college’s advisory board to let them know how students and faculty members have been impacted by the pandemic. Read her message here.

There is no one untouched by the impact of COVID-19, and this edition of Donor Connection shares stories from around NSU. Read this special edition newsletter featuring NSU alumni and faculty who are working on the frontlines, proving that not all heroes wear capes.

Finally, our online library of great content continues to grow. The student literary journal, Digressions, was recently published, and we hope you’ll take the opportunity to view the talented artwork, poetry, photographs and prose put forward by our talented students. We have additional webinars scheduled from the College of Psychology, Marine Environmental Education Center, Alvin Sherman Library, and NSU Alumni Association. We invite you to join us for any of these upcoming sessions. If you’ve missed any talks, please subscribe to our YouTube channel to view past workshops.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me or someone on my staff. We look forward to connecting with you in any way that we can.

Have an amazing week,

Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D.
