Mularkey’s Message – December 2023

The holidays are quickly approaching, along with the festivities, celebrations, and gatherings that accompany the season. Spend time with family and friends, reflect on the year that has passed and make resolutions for the future. If those ideas feel overwhelming or if the holidays dredge up feelings of anxiety and sadness for you or someone you love, NSU Health has services focused on mental health.  Located in Fort Lauderdale-Davie, the state-of-the-art NSU Health Psychology Services Center serves all residents of the South Florida area, including children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. Reach out if you need help—we hope everyone can find joy this season.

NSU is celebrating a new designation, this one from the National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C). On Nov. 1, NSU was designated as NCAE-C – Cyber Research (R) through the academic year 2028. NSU received the NCAE-C – Cyber Defense (CD) designation in 2021, and one of only a handful of institutions around the nation to obtain both CAE-CD and CAE-R designation. Did You Know?

  • In October, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson visited the Alan B. Levan | NSU Broward Center of Innovation to see firsthand how the network is powering innovation in South Florida’s space ecosystem.
  • Jean Latimer, Ph.D., Director at the NSU AutoNation Institute for Breast Cancer Research and Care and an Associate Professor and Cancer Research Scientist at NSU’s College of Pharmacy, was recently interviewed by South Florida PBS to talk about her research focused on investigating DNA damage in human breast tissue caused by environmental factors, including from toxins found in South Florida drinking water.
  • The United Soccer League (USL) recently announced that its newest women’s professional soccer league franchise, known as “Super League Fort Lauderdale” will be located on the NSU campus. When the team is activated, the USL will have teams located across the United States.

In this issue of Donor Connection, we talked with Kenneth Johnson, D.O., executive associate dean of the Tampa Bay Regional Campus. An NSU alumni and member of the faculty for nearly 30 years, Johnson’s enthusiasm for the family at NSU is contagious. We also highlight a new transformational gift to the university. After losing his wife Cathy to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), more commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, David Husman, J.D., donated $10 million to further ALS research and treatment at NSU. Husman’s gift brings NSU’s Campaign for Preeminence to more than $870 million, bringing us closer to our $1 billion goal by 2025.

We hope you enjoy the content and have the opportunity to engage with NSU in the near future—take in a performance at the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Theater, visit the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, cheer on Sharks at an upcoming athletics event, or join us for any of the upcoming events featured in our monthly Dive In newsletter.

Thank you for your continued support. Fins Up!
