ASQ February Meeting Welcomes Retired NSU Decision Sciences Professor Dr. David Hinds on February 21st

Join the American Society for Quality’s Southeast Florida chapter for a special presentation by ex-NSU Decision Sciences professor David Hinds, Ph.D. In this month’s presentation, Dr. Hinds will present “Why Do Managers Resist Quality Improvement?” on Tuesday, February 21st at The Miami Lakes Hotel. The event will be held in-person and online with in-person guests receiving a full course meal with options of Pan Mahi Mahi, Champagne Chicken, or Pasta Primavera. Dinner for the in-person event will begin at 6:00 p.m. eastern, followed by a special quality related RU workshop at 6:45 p.m. Both in-person and online registrants can see the presentation beginning at 7:30 p.m. ASQ Student Branch members receive a special price of $5 for attending the in-person event.

Presentation Topic: Why Do Managers Resist Quality Improvement?

In this session, David will present his experiences in coaching Lean as a management system including his teaching model. The model frames six essential Lean techniques as the Lean way of conducting four common management practices. The model David will discuss also includes novel ideas such as the replacement of seven or eight wastes with four. He will also talk about the use of a process breakdown sheet instead of a full-blown value stream map. This will be followed by an interactive discussion among event attendees (both, in-person and virtual) examining why some managers accept and adopt quality improvement methods while others resist; and what could be done about this.

About the Speaker: David Hinds, Ph.D.

David Hinds is a business coach and author of the book entitled, “The Essence of Lean: A Superior System of Management.” During his professional career, he was the owner of a building supply distributor and held management positions in consulting, bio-technology, and transportation. After earning his Ph.D., David joined the faculty of the Huizenga Business School where he developed and taught courses in entrepreneurship, service operations management, data-driven decision making, and information systems.
